Capriate San Gervasio, Villaggio Crespi d'Adda, Unesco heritage site
The village of Crespi d'Adda is certainly the most important testimony in Italy of the worker’s villages; it was one of the world’s most complete and original creations, though keeping almost intact its town-planning and architectural scheme. Crespi d'Adda is a real model of an ideal town; a very interesting self-sufficient microcosm, where community life developed around the factory. The factory and he village of Crespi d'Adda were built when in Italy the modern industry was being created. The idea was that of giving to all employees a small villa, with a garden and a vegetable garden, and to provide all the necessary services to the life of the community. In 1995 Unesco included Crespi d'Adda in its List of World Heritage Sites, in that it is an "exceptional example of the phenomenon of workers’ villages, the most complete and best preserved in Southern Europe”.
