Bergamo, Rocca
Very ancient fortification, whose first origins can be traced back, probably, to the Roman era. During the centuries the construction was seized by the Longobards, The Franks, Venice and, finally, the Austrians. In 1848 the patriots from Bergamo surrounded and laid siege on the Austrians barricaded in the Rocca (Fortress) and drove them from the city. For this reason the Rocca today is the site of the Risorgimento Museum.
The little church of Sant'Eufemia can still be found within the Rocca, and is one of the most ancient churches of Bergamo (its present aspect goes back to the reconstruction made in the 1900's, but it can be traced back to the 6th century). The Parco delle rimembranze, (Park of the Remembrances) from which one can enjoy a beautiful view of the city and hillside, surrounds the construction.
