MappaBrescia, Piazza Paolo VI

Around Piazza Paolo VI stand two of the most important medieval monuments in Brescia: the Duomo Vecchio known as the Rotonda (XI century) and the Broletto (XIII century). In the XVII the square was enriched by the Duomo Nuovo. The Rotonda is one of the few round Romanesque churches in Italy; it has an attractive interior with large circular central area surrounded by a pillared walkway. Among the masterpieces in the cathedral is the Sarcophagus of the bishop of Brescia Berardo Maggi (XIV C.) made in red marble from Verona and the Assumption by Moretto. The Broletto is topped by the Torre del Pegol and has been expanded and rebuilt several times. A fragment of a frescoe by Gentile da Fabbriano can been seen in one of the rooms inside.
