Gravedona, Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tiglio

MappaGravedona, Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tiglio

In the IV and V centuries Dongo, Gravedona and Sorico were the centre of spreading Christianity in the high part of the lake. These places created the domain of the Tre Pievi, and had the privilege of their own magistrates and a mint. In 1500 the whole area was under the control of Gian Giacomo Medici, he was known as the feared Medeghino and the clever Sir who lived in the famous Musso castle.
The religious importance of this area is enforced by the presence of many churches such as the extraordinary Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Tiglio at Gravedona. Unique example of its genre it incorporates a bell tower in its façade and was built in the XII century. It preserves precious frescos and a priceless wooden crucifix inside.
