Isola Dovarese, Piazza Gonzaghesca and Palio delle Contrade

MappaIsola Dovarese, Piazza Gonzaghesca and Palio delle Contrade

The Piazza Gonzaghesca of Isola Dovarese (Cremona) was built between 1587 and 1590 by order of Giulio Cesare Gonzaga, on a project by architect Giulio Brunelli. It is quite big square for a small village, a real peral of the Renaissance town-planning of the period in which the Gonzaga family ruled the area. The square's major side is faced by a large arch, which probably led to the area in front of the Rocca (the fortress), flanked by wonderful porches. Here is also the Palazzo Pretorio, an austere-looking building now hosting the Town Hall. The village has always been divided into four quarters; Le Gerre, Porta Tenca, San Bernardino, and San Giuseppe. Every year since 1966, the Palio delle Contrade is held. This event lasts for 3 days and ends with competitions and historic shows. After the “Magheer” competition, the banner is given to award the winning quarter. The latter is granted the “exemption from tax payment for the following year”.
