Mantova, Castle of San Giorgio
Built following the will of Frances I, the castle was constructed by Bartolino da Novara and built between 1390 and 1406. It is a real fortress protecting the town in the area of intersection between Lago di Mezzo and Lago Inferiore (i.e. the Middle and the Lower Lake). The typical outside features four big towers and a deep ditch. The inside is completed integrated in the rooms of the Duke’s Palace and shows and famous Room of the Spouses, which is very remarkable in the context of Renaissance art and was decorated by Mantegna between 1465 and 1474 following the will of marquis Ludovick II.
