Milano, Civico Museo Archeologico - Ex Monastero Maggiore
Initially laid out in several rooms of the Sforza Castle, in 1965 it was transferred to its current location, the old Monastero Maggiore (Great Monastery) which was built in the area of the Circo Romano (Roman Circus). Sarcophagi, stele and Roman architectural remains are displayed under the porticos of the cloisters. At the centre of the courtyard there is a huge sacred stone from the Camonica Valley with engravings dating back to the Bronze Age.
The museum is divided into sections: Roman, Greek, Etruscan, Late Medieval Age and Gandhara (an artistic movement developed in the first to the fourth century in the north-western region of India). The items are assembled in five rooms, two on the upper floor (Magna Grecia ceramics, findings from Cesarea Marittima, Roman material) and three on the lower floor (Greek, Etruscan and Roman art).
