This is a grand and imposing architectural complex, built around the middle of the 17th century, in the form of a palazzo [town residence] rather than a villa. Such, in fact, it has always been and still is considered. It has the compact and closed-in structure of a palazzo. The building is of remarkable length and is made up of three main sections, of which the central one – the greatest, in size as well as importance – consists of a main courtyard surrounded by four blocks. The most singular feature is the loggia, which has three-arch openings supported by slender doric columns and is on the first floor overlooking the park, which extends for over a kilometre behind the house. The garden of Palazzo Arese Borromeo is in the style of the grandest Italian creations, with strong French influence. The interior is superb: as many as thirtythree rooms have splendid
