Pavia, City Museums

The City Museums of Pavia, which since 1950 have been accommodated in the Visconti Castle, show an art heritage of high profile and quality. The exhibition, which is displayed in the splendid frescoed rooms, makes it possible for visitors to learn about the art history of Pavia and is divided around several thematic sections, many of which have been set up or enriched over the last ten years: the Archaeological Museum with the extraordinary collection of Roman glasses; the room on Pavia as Lombard capital; the Romanesque, late Gothic and Renaissance sculpture masterpieces; the refined Art Gallery, with paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries and the significant collections of the 19th and 20th centuries, among which the generous Morone donation stands out; the section on modern sculpture and plaster casts; the Museum of Luigi Robecchi Bricchetti, from Pavia and first explorer of Somalia and the Museum of the Italian Risorgimento on local history, which stands in close relation with national events.
