Natural Preserve Monte Alpe
The Natural Preserve of Monte Alpe is totally enclosed within the administrative borders of the Menconico municipality, in the Upper Valle Staffora, close to Mt Penice. Established in 1985, at an altitude between 800m and 1,260m above sea-level, it covers 328 ha, 300 of which covered by woods and the remaining hectares covered by meadows, meadows and pasturelands, and cultivated lands.
The Monte Alpe preserve has a great importance from the naturalistic and landscape points of view, thanks to thick broadleaf and conifer forests, alternated with meadows rich in valuable flowers. Biodiversity also includes animal species, among which an ant species that has been used for biocontrol since the 1950's.
In 1980 the Preserve was declared “biotope” by the Lombardy Region, and then acknowledged as a Site of Community Importance by the HABITAT Directive.
The Preserve offers great opportunities for interesting and relaxing naturalistic hikes.
