Penice Pass
The Mt Penice, whose name comes from the Latin toponym Saltus Boielis, with its 1,460m is one of the highest mounains of the Ligurian Apennine, on the border between the Oltrepò Pavese territory, the Staffora valley and the area of Piacenza, the val Trebbia and val Tidone.
The grand setting comprises on one side Bobbio, located on the bottom of the valley and along the Trebbia river, and the Alps on the other side; and also the Ligurian Apennine on one side, and the spurs sloping towards the Po valley and its towns.
Grass skiing, born around the ‘60s in Germany, is a sport similar to alpine skiing, but unlike the latter, it is done on grass slopes. Since the surface changes, the equipment also changes; for grass skiing “caterpillar skis” are used, about 70cm long, on which the ski bindings for ski boots are fixed. The “Renzo Gallini” slope of Casamatti di Romagnese (Pavia) was inaugurated in September 2006, and since then it has been possible to enjoy grass skiing in safe conditions. The list of facilities is completed by the "Palestra dello sci", located the Penice Pass. This ski resort covers an area encompasssing the municipalities of Menconico (Pavia) and Bobbio (Piacenza), with a medium-difficulty tourist slope and a slope for athletes, equipped with a timing system. The facilities available also include a wide school camp (5,000,000 sqm) that is fully equipped for kids’ entertainment.
This year a snow-park has been created for snowboard buffs, equipped with snowboard-jump facilities and iron structures for evolutions with the snowboard.
The slopes are equipped with an artificial snowing installation and night lighting.
