The Rock Engraving Park in Grosio (Parco delle Incisioni Rupestri) lies on two hills, namely Dosso dei Castelli and Dosso Giroldo, bewteen two valleys, Adda and Grosina. Inside the park are the Churches of St. Faustino and Giovita, the Old Castle (Castello Vecchio, which dates back to the 10th – 11th century) and the New Visconti Castel (Castello Nuovo Visconteo, which dates back to the 15th century). Among its more than 50 carvings you will is Rupe Magna that, with its more than 5000 engravings, deserves a very special mention.
From the 90’s, the Superintendent of the Archeological Heritage of Lombardy carried out an excavation work on the two hillocks and two wide settlements developed during the Bronze and Iron Age were found. In the framework of adding value to the Valtellina’s territory archeological heritage an Antiquarium was developed. The museum shows the current and finalised research projects by presenting a wide selection of finds from the pre/proto-historic populated areas which had been detected on the Hills of Grosio.
The equipped paths provided by in the Park and in the Antiquarium aim at illustrating the history of the site also with reference to Medieval and modern history covering a time span of more than 4000 years.
