Madesimo lies on the long S. Giacomo Valley, that stretches from Chiavenna, towards the north, then closes on the pass of Spluga, on the border with Switzerland. It is well-known and appreciated as a tourist locality for the size and efficiency of its skiing territory. The fascinating 18th-century village preserves various old houses, beautiful surroundinga and very good typical cuisine of the Chiavenna Valley. Famous intellectuals, such as Carducci, frequented this village in the past, particularly the still surviving inn, the "Osteria Vegia". From a sports point of view, the skiing territory of Madesimo hosted one of the first ever alpine skiing competitions in 1911 and it was appreciated by famous skiers such as Stefano Sertorelli and Zeno Colo', who settled here as top-level ski instructors. In Madesimo's surrounding area you can find beautiful sights such as the Pianazzo Waterfall, a 160m fall formed by the Scalcoggia river and Lakes Azzurro Emet, but also pleasant excursion destinations such as "Groppera", "Tambo'" and "Suretta".
