Sondrio, Palazzo Pretorio
The structure of Palazzo Pretorio in Sondrio dates back to the 11th century, but the current building is the result of the 16th century reconstruction by Governor Grigione. Until the year 1908, when the new communal building was inaugurated, Palazzo Pretorio was the seat of the town hall. Today the building in Piazza Campello is the seat of various town associations, communal offices and exhibition rooms, including the splendid Sala Terranea with frescoes with the coat of arms of the Grigioni. The façade shows a severe and well-preserved 16th century portal. A courtyard inside with the double loggia is decorated with the ancient technique of the grey scratch. The mayor’s office is currently located in one of the best "stüe", i.e. wooden rooms, still existing in Valtellina, with inlaid and engraved wood of the 15th century. The Collegiate Church of the SS. Gervasio and Protasio also overlooks the same Piazza Campello .
