Teglio
A resort for summer and winter sports on the peaks of Monte Combolo, Teglio dominates the centre of the Valtellina; perhaps for this reason the name was given to the valley itself, if you accept the derivation of "Tellina Vallis" from "Tillium," the Latin name of the hamlet. The historic and artistic heritage is important here, beginning with the carved rocks from the prehistoric age, rediscovered in 1941, to include more recent evidence. You should may note, here the Palazzo Besta, a rare Valtellinese example of Renaissance architecture that also today houses the Prehistoric Museum. The villas Juvalta-Cima and Ongania-Botterini are also from the Renaissance era. Also important are the older Parish Church of S. Eufemia, built in the VI century; the Church of San Pietro, one of the more significant Roman examples in Valtellina, and, finally, the Oratorio della Confraternita dei Bianchi, on the facade of which you can admire an important depiction in fresco of a macabre dance. Speaking of the beauty of the surroundings of Teglio, we must mention its specialty. Visiting the hamlet in July, during the festival dedicted to it, you can taste the famous pizzoccheri, pride of the local gastronomy. We should not omit, however, other delicious foods such as the polenta "taragna," "sciatt" and the varieties of game, especially enjoyable with the tasty local red wine Valgella.
