The Valmalenco is an important ski resort and a popular place for hiking, thanks to over 60km of slopes and a rich network of refuges located at different altitudes. With the towering 4,050m of the Pizzo Bernina, the Valmalenco stretches north of Sondrio, along the course of the Mallero Stream and its tributary Lanterna. It is the largest side valley of the Valtellina. From Sondrio it once represented the natural way towards Switzerland. Today its paths represent a context of high landscape value, which can be appreciated all-year-round. The valley is also renowned at international level for mining activity. Indeed, over 260 types of minerals are present here, part of which can be seen in the Historic Museum of the Valmalenco. The excellent accommodation opportunities allow most locals to work in the tourism industry.
