Castiglione Olona

MappaCastiglione Olona

The village of Castiglione Olona, known as the “Tuscan Island in Lombardy”, has very ancient origins. It was a Roman fortress, then a village contended by the Visconti and the Torriani families that struggled at length for dominion over this territory stretching along the Olona River banks. In renaissance times, this area lived its period of maximum splendour owing to Cardinal Branda Castiglioni’s presence and to his particularly enlightened initiatives; thereafter, after a lengthy period of decline in the middle of the nineteenth century thanks to the industriousness and talen of the Mazzucchelli family, Castiglione Olona became the first industrial pole of our province. In June 2004 the Plastic Art Museum, which collects the works of world famous artists created with plastic materials, was opened in the Palazzo Castiglioni of Monteruzzo (Corte del Doro).
