Varese, Piazzettà del Podestà

MappaVarese, Piazzettà del Podestà

From piazza San Vittore, through the arco Mera, built in 1850, you enter Piazza del Podestà, the old civic centre of the town, where there is a monument to Garibaldi, a 1901 copy of the original sculpted in grey stone by Luigi Buzzi Leoni in 1861. Behind the statue is palazzo Pretorio (1570), once home to the town Hall, and the facade of palazzo Biumi, built in 1615. This has balconies with railings in wrought iron and a courtyard with arcades, at the bottom of which ran the river Vellone, the natural edge of the town.
