Bisceglie
Between Molfetta and Trani, the municipality of Bisceglie is in the province of Andria – Trani – Barletta since 2008. Famous for the beauty of its coastline interspersed with coves and limpid sea, it was awarded the Bandiera Blu (the “blue flag”) in 2006. Other tourist attractions include its archaeological relics of global importance and more recent architectural evidence. The area of Bisceglie has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic age, proof of which are the dolmens, megalithic monuments that acted as sepulchres or altars. The town’s first fortifications were instigated by the Count of Trani in 1060. The town’s castle was built by the Swabians, later developed and embellished by the Angevins under whose rule Bisceglie had its most thriving period. Bisceglie’s darkest period in history, however, was during Spanish oppression and rule, redeemed by the ensuing French rule.
