Lizzano

MappaLizzano

Lizzano is an agricultural village of great importance in the Province of Taranto, located 25 Km south-east of the chief town and only 5 km from the sea. This attracts many tourists during the summer.
Its origins are probably Greek-Roman, then its existence was supported by documentary evidence in the Early Middle Ages after the great impulse given by Byzantine monks, who were capable of exploiting the fertility of its lands and built many farms (masserie) and crypts. A veritable succession of feudatories started in 1315 with the Marquis Geoffrey De Pandis and up to 1697, with the most recent Marquis of Lizzano, Nicholas Chjurlia.
